COP28 Highlights: Progress and Challenges

Policy Development

The Conference of the Parties, known as COP, is a series of international meetings organized under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The UNFCCC is a treaty established in 1992 to address the global challenge of climate change. COP meetings bring together representatives from countries that are parties to the convention, providing a platform for collaboration, negotiation, and decision-making on matters related to climate change.

Expectations from the collaborators: Collaboration between Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) and startups presents a range of compelling incentives. FPOs can access broader markets and streamline operations, while startups offer innovative technologies, financial support, and data-driven insights. Together, they can boost efficiency, scale operations, and promote sustainable agricultural practices. This collaboration not only enhances FPOs' capabilities but also drives innovation and market competitiveness, benefiting the agricultural sector as a whole.

China currently accounts for slightly more than half of global coal demand. As the country grows its renewable energy generation, coal demand is predicted to fall in 2024 and plateau by 2026. The IEA predicts a 2.3% global reduction in coal demand by 2026. Despite the anticipated decline, worldwide coal consumption is predicted to stay above 8 billion tons until 2026. Keisuke Sadamori, IEA Director of Energy Markets and Security, stressed the importance of increased efforts to meet international climate targets, adding that a tipping point for coal is on the horizon.

Global coal demand to decline by 2026

According to the estimate, which was released on December 15, global coal demand will climb by 1.4% in 2023, reaching 8.5 billion tons for the first time. However, regional variances are apparent, with the European Union and the United States both forecasting a 20% reduction in demand. In contrast, demand in India is predicted to climb by 8% and in China by 5% due to increased electrical demand and lower hydropower generation.

India Struggles with Climate Change

Climate change has turned farmers' once-predictable apple harvesting seasons into nightmares, with unexpected weather patterns harming harvests. The consequences go beyond Kashmir, as illustrated by a Punjab administrative block losing over Rs 700 crore owing to frost and a premature heatwave that destroyed wheat and citrus crops.
